What is appendix cancer?
Appendix cancer is a cancer that starts in the appendix, the small pouch attached to the large intestine. It is not one disease. There are several types, from slow-growing mucinous tumors like LAMN to faster-growing adenocarcinomas, and some types spread mucus through the belly, a condition called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). It is often found by accident, during surgery for what looks like appendicitis. In the United States, about 1 in every 100,000 people is diagnosed each year, and the true number is likely higher because many low-grade tumors are not counted in national cancer registries.
