Understanding an appendix cancer diagnosis

Appendix cancer is also called appendiceal cancer. The words on a pathology report describe the type of tumor. Different types can need different care, so ask your medical team to explain your exact diagnosis, grade and stage.

You can read our plain-language introduction to appendix cancer and bring questions to your next appointment. Our group offers a place to talk about the experience of a rare diagnosis with other patients and caregivers.

LAMN, HAMN and PMP: what do the names mean?

LAMN
Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: a mucus-producing tumor of the appendix with low-grade cell changes.
HAMN
High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: a mucus-producing tumor with high-grade cell changes.
PMP
Pseudomyxoma peritonei: a condition in which mucin builds up in the abdomen, often associated with a tumor of the appendix.

These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. Your pathology and medical team can explain how they apply to you.

Explore our LAMN guide, HAMN guide and PMP guide. Patients and caregivers affected by these diagnoses are welcome in the group.

Terminology reference: National Cancer Institute: Appendiceal Cancer. This overview is educational and does not determine a diagnosis or treatment.

Who is the group for?
